Watsonville High Principal Moves to District Post
Watsonville High School principal Murry Schekman is taking over as the assistant superintendent for secondary schools in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. He replaces Cathy Stefanki, who retired in June.

Schekman will oversee the school he led for four years along with Aptos and Pajaro Valley High Schools. He will also coordinate curriculum and communication between the middle and junior high schools that feed into those schools.

Schekman joined Watsonville High as a reformer, showing the staff that it could expect more since students from comparable schools in Salinas were outperforming Watsonville's on standardized testing.

"Murry has done an outstanding job at Watsonville High School," said veteran Pajaro trustee Willie Yahiro.

He said he expects that Schekman will be able to draw from experience working with alternative education as well as his efforts at Watsonville High to benefit the district's many high school students.

Although Watsonville High was a late addition to California's tier-two list of persistently lowest achieving schools in the spring, district administration and trustees supported Schekman's efforts there.

"When he came back to Watsonville High School, he faced real challenges and now the school is on a very nice level. Academically it's on the right track," said Yahiro.

This spring, Schekman said holding workshops with a specialist on actively engaging students and developing smaller learning communities were paying off with improved achievement. The school now offers seven different academies that link to career pathways.

He also said recent technology purchased by the district allows teachers to better track student progress and share information about successful strategies with other schools.
